This year we’re celebrating the 80 th anniversary of Rodgers & Hammerstein! In July 1942, the Theatre Guild announced – and The New York Times shared – that Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II were teaming up for their first collaboration: a musical adaptation of Green Grow the Lilacs. That musical would eventually become Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!

His father William was a theatre manager and, for many years, director of Hammerstein’s Victoria, the most popular vaudeville theatre of its day.
