He played, to one degree or another, nearly all of the most common instruments of jazz, including guitar, piano, organ, drums, vibraphone, and various saxophones; he also composed music and tap- danced. It is for his humor that he is most widely remembered and loved.

Composer, songwriter ("Flat Foot Floogie", "Tutti Frutti"), author, pianist and singer who began his career as "Slim", half of the Slim & Slam team with Slam Stewart, later forming his own group. Joining ASCAP in 1949, his chief musical collaborators included Bud Green, Harry Squires and Slam Stewart.

He relocated to England in 1983, and played with George Melly and John Chilton’s Feetwarmers, appearing on their BBC television series.
