Yet, few modern fans even know his name, despite its romantic swagger. He was a true lead guitarist and played on over a hundred sides with Leroy Carr, one of the most influential blues artists.
Scrapper Blackwell was born Francis Hillman Blackwell on February 21, 1903, in Syracuse, South Carolina. Growing up in a musical family, Blackwell was exposed to various genres, including gospel, ragtime, and blues. His father played the guitar, and it was through watching him that Blackwell developed an interest in the instrument.
Scrapper Blackwell’s last recording session with Carr was in February 1935, ending bitterly with both musicians left the studio mid-session and on bad terms, stemming from payment disputes. Two months later Blackwell received a phone call informing him of Carr’s death due to heavy drinking and nephritis.
