It began in 1971 when President Richard Nixon declared drug abuse to be ‘public enemy number one’ and increased funding for drug control.

The War on Drugs sort son premier album studio, Wagonwheel Blues, en 2008. Kurt Vile, membre fondateur de la formation, quitte alors le groupe pour se consacrer à sa carrière solo. Le second album studio du groupe, Slave Ambient, sort en 2011 et précède une tournée qui amènera la formation en Europe et notamment en France [2].
