Devin Garrett Townsend, né le 5 mai 1972 à New Westminster, est un musicien multi-instrumentiste (entre autres chanteur, guitariste et claviériste) canadien, exerçant dans différents styles de heavy metal.. Il mène une carrière solo, mais aussi et surtout avec ses différents groupes Strapping Young Lad, The Devin Townsend Band (de 2003 à 2006) et le Devin Townsend Project (depuis 2009).

Mit dem Devin Townsend Project kehrte Townsend im Jahr 2010 wieder auf die Bühne zurück. Unter anderem führte er im Jahr 2011 in London alle vier Alben des Devin Townsend Projects an vier aufeinanderfolgenden Tagen auf. Die Aufzeichnung dieser Konzerte wurde im Juni 2012 unter dem Titel By A Thread veröffentlicht.
