Rózsa was introduced to classical and folk music by his parents and was trained in Germany, France, and the UK before moving to the US in 1940. He became a US citizen in 1946.

Rózsa’s introduction to film scoring came in 1934 during a conversation with his friend, the Swiss composer Arthur Honegger, who considered the work to be good supplemental income.
