Gustav Mahler (Kaliště, 7. srpnja 1860. – Beč, 18. svibnja 1911.), austrijski skladatelj i dirigent židovskog podrijetla. Mahler je za života bio jedan od vodećih orkestralnih i opernih dirigenata. Bio je i jedan od najznačajnijih skladatelja kasnog romantizma, iako njegova glazba u glazbenim krugovima nikada nije bila potpuno prihvaćena dok je bio živ.

Mahler, a composer of Late-Romantic music and conductor at such prestigious institutions as the Vienna State Opera and the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, died in Vienna, aged just 50.
Such was Gustav Mahler’s all-embracing vision that he earned the respect and admiration of all these composers. During a conversation with Jean Sibelius, Mahler insisted that his symphonies were “whole worlds” embracing his literary tastes, his neuroses, responses to nature and, most especially, the inexorable cycle of life and death.
