I came out here to pursue my dream; but my parents always told me, “You got to support your dream before you can pursue that; you gotta be able to eat, because if you can’t eat, you can’t create.”
Kym is actually a comedienne, actress, activist, author and — perhaps most importantly — a mother. S he got her start nearly three decades ago now. Originally from the Cleveland area, Kym has been based in Los Angeles for years. She was a schoolteacher in Compton back in the day but always loved performing and, especially, comedy.

Back in 1963, Kym Whitley's father and uncle joined forces and formed the firm Whitley/Whitley Architects and Planners. Their sister, Joyce Whitley, joined the family business in the late '60s and served as the firm's vice president (via Black America Web).
