If it hadn’t been for the foresight of Sir Alec Clegg, Chief Education Officer at West Riding County Council, we might not have been able to see it at all. In 1947 he purchased the house for £30,000. It gave Bretton a purpose and an acceptable standard over the following decades. Now it stands silent.
By the mid 20th century, the hall’s days as a home were over. Sir Alec Clegg, Chief Education Officer for the West Riding, oversaw the creation of the college at Bretton Hall in 1949. He helped establish the area as a pioneering and innovative place for education.

CLEGG, M.A. BRETTON HALL. The College of Bretton Hall was founded as a Training College for Teachers by the West Riding Education Authority in 1949 at the suggestion of the Ministry of Education. Bretton Hall, bought by the Authority for use as a College, was built between 1700 and 1750, and was formerly one of the country homes of Lord Allendale.
