From Black Spiritual to White Revival Song. Alfred H. Ackley (1887–1960), known primarily for “I serve a risen Savior” (“He Lives”), copyrighted a separate song, “As a tree beside the water” (“I Shall Not Be Moved”), in 1909. Other than the primary theme, neither the music nor the text resembles the song in Boatner’s collection.
In the United States and internationally, participants in twentieth-century social movements sang "We Shall Not Be Moved" to express unity and conviction. The song is based lyrically and musically on the religious hymn “I Shall Not Be Moved,” which was popular with both Black and White congregations in the first decades of the century.
