Erste Erfolge erzielte er 1984 mit seiner Rolle in Yash Chopras Drama Mashaal, wofür er einen Filmfare Award als bester Nebendarsteller erhielt, sowie für Shekhar Kapurs Science-Fiction-Film Mr. India im Jahr 1987.
