SSEES is home to one of the world’s largest concentrations of academic staff devoted to the study of the Slavonic and East European region, with some 80 academics engaging in teaching and research in the fields of politics, sociology, economics, business, history, languages, literature and culture, all underpinned by our commitment to language-based area studies.
Our flexible BA programmes combine core disciplines with a focus on the SSEES region (Russia, The Baltics, Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe). The UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES) is the UK's largest institution for research and teaching on Russia, the Baltics, and Central, East and South-East Europe. The school's mission is to foster cross-disciplinary approaches to area studies, using expertise in our primary geographical region to generate knowledge and understanding of the broader world.
We cover languages from two major language families of the world (Indo-European and Uralic): alongside the Slavonic languages (Czech, Polish, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbian/Croatian, Slovene, Belorussian, Russian, Ukrainian) which are spoken across the region, you can study Romanian – a Romance language closely related to Italian, French, and Spanish –, Albanian, two Baltic languages ...
