The band started out, in 1959, as an instrumental trio called The Blue Velvets. The original line up was John Fogerty (guitar), Stu Cook (piano), and Doug Clifford (drums).

The Golliwogs (conhecida como The Blue Velvets até 1964) foi a banda americana de rock, que pouco depois veio a ser Creedence Clearwater Revival . The Golliwogs were never happy with the moniker, nor with the blond wigs they were sometimes required to wear, but between 1964 and 1967 they completed a series of excellent singles. Tom Fogerty dominated early releases, but by 1966 his younger brother was wresting control of the group.
