For the scope of this piece, I examine the work of illustrators Vashti Harrison, Jerry Pinkney, and Faith Ringgold. These three American artists utilize children’s books to revise, reimagine, and retell narratives of Black Americans, while constructing positive imagery for young readers, who may still be learning to make meaning of the world while discovering their place in it.
