Nel 1977 Steve Cropper si unì agli Levon Helm & The Rco All-Stars, un gruppo formato Levon Helm, batterista dei The Band. In questa formazione suonarono anche Booker T. Jones e Donald Dunn . Nel 1978 Steve Cropper, insieme a Donald Dunn e al batterista Willie Hall , allievo dello storico Al Jackson Jr., entrò a far parte della Blues Brothers Band di Dan Aykroyd e John Belushi .
In 1975, Steve had moved to Los Angeles and he reformed Booker T. & the M.G's with Jackson and Dunn. Before the group could make their comeback, Jackson was murdered in his home in Memphis. In 1978, Cropper and Dunn became members of Levon Helm's RCO All-Stars. Cropper and Dunn would also become part of the Blues Brothers Band.
