Timothy Alexander was born in Newark, New Jersey. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Drexel University in 2006 and a graduate degree from the Drexel University LeBow College of Business in 2008. Alexander also earned a J.D. from Rutgers School of Law in 2013. His career experience includes working as an attorney.

Tim Alexander is hailed frequently for his "polyrhythmic" playing. Before Primus, Alexander played and recorded with Major Lingo, which at the time was a ska-based rhythm band that featured a lap steel guitar as the lead instrument, played by Tony Bruno. Alexander got the job with Primus replacing Jay Lane in 1988, and lasted until 1996.
