All songs written by Steve Howe except "Lost Symphony", "Will O'the Wisp" and " Pleasure Stole The Night" written by Steve and Jan Howe. The album was produced by Steve Howe and Eddie Offord and engineered by Eddie Offord, Jeremey Stenham, Paul Northfield and Declan O'Doherty. It was recorded at Morgan & Advision Studios in 1975.
The album also features some Yes' members, Alan White and Patrick Moraz, and the ex-Yes' member Bill Bruford, besides a large number of guest musicians invited by Steve Howe. "Beginnings" has nine tracks and all songs were written by Howe except the first track "Doors Of Sleep", which was written by Howe with lyrics by Alice Meynell.

Back in the mid-60s, when he was still in his 20s, he won the support slot to tour Europe with legendary jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. In 1973 he co-founded Refugee with ex-Nice members Lee Jackson and Brian Davison before being poached to join Yes a year later in time to record Relayer.
