In September 1700, Sir Walter St John, 3rd Baronet (1622–1708), of Battersea and of Lydiard Tregoze, Wiltshire, signed a deed that established a charity to form a school to "teach twenty poor boys of said parish" (Battersea). This was the start of Sir Walter St John's School, which was to survive for 286 years.

  5. The OGA was formed in 1902 as an association of the old boys of Battersea Grammar School. When BGS amalgamated with Rosa Bassett Grammar School, formerly Streatham Secondary School for Girls, in 1977 to form Furzedown Secondary School, the members of the Association agreed to open membership to former pupils and staff of all three schools.
