Moving to New York City in 1974, Jay Dee Daugherty co-founded the Mumps with high school friends Lance Loud and Kristian Hoffman. He began playing with Patti Smith in 1975 after a brief stint as her sound man. During a hiatus while Smith healed from a serious injury from a fall off a stage, he helped rock journalist Lester Bangs form a band that included guitarist Robert Quine.

Jay Dee Daugherty played live with The Church starting in 1990, filling in for the departed Richard Ploog. He played on one album, 1992's Priest = Aura, and toured Australia with the band promoting the album in October, 1992.His last performance with The Church was at the Oct. 17, 1992, Enmore Theatre show in Sydney, which was also the last show for Peter Koppes before his 4-year sabbatical.
He was replaced by Jay Dee Daugherty (ex-Patti Smith Group). Ploog joined The Church member Peter Koppes' group The Well to tour and record From the Well (1990) and Iridescence (1991). Ploog has also drummed for The Wigmen, The Deadly Hume, Funkicide, and The Sleep-ins.
