Ross also was an accomplished actress and has appeared in a number of films, such as Superman III (1983), Throw Mama from the Train (1987), Pump Up the Volume (1990), and Blue Sky (1994).

She had continued to record, including the 1996 Music Is Forever, with Tommy Flanagan, 2007’s Live In London, with Peter King, and then in 2014 came the release of her final album, To Lady With Love, a moving tribute to Billie Holiday.
