Oliveros died on November 24th, 2016, at the age of eighty-four, and the Facebook and Twitter feeds of experimental-music fans were filled with short excerpts from her “Sonic Meditations.” Her eccentric sound exercises—what she once called “recipes” for listening—briefly went viral.

The piece opens out quietly at first: sharp, oscillating frequencies gradually arresting and compacting all surrounding noise to create a tunnel of solitary, vivid sound.
