Born in Dorcchester, MA in 1928, Hunter was the standard-bearer of The Boston School tradition, taught at the Vesper George School of Art in Boston and graduating in 1949.

After high school, he won a scholarship to the Vesper George School of Art in Boston and continued his studies at the National Academy of Design in New York City. His first book, Lentil, was published in 1940, the same year he married Margaret Durand, the daughter of children’s author Ruth Sawyer.
