Max Ernst (Brühl, 2 d'abril de 1891-París, 1 d'abril de 1976) fou un artista alemany nacionalitzat francès que va ser una figura fonamental tant en el moviment dadà com en el surrealisme. Es va caracteritzar per la utilització d'una extraordinària diversitat de tècniques, estils i materials.
La azarosa vida de Max Ernst se convirtió durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial en argumento idóneo para una novela. En 1938, tras abandonar el grupo surrealista por solidaridad con Paul Éluard, se fue a vivir con Leonora Carrington a Saint-Martin d’Ardèche, donde reconstruyeron juntos una casa, llenándola de relieves y pinturas.

Max Ernst (2 April 1891 – 1 April 1976) was a German (naturalised American in 1948 and French in 1958) painter, sculptor, printmaker, graphic artist, and poet. A prolific artist, Ernst was a primary pioneer of the Dada movement and Surrealism in Europe.
