He is known for his role as Ryan O'Reily on the HBO prison drama Oz and had roles in TV series Rescue Me, 30 Rock, Sex and the City and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. He also plays Mayhem in a series of Allstate commercials.

Dean Winters went into cardiac arrest for two minutes on the way to the hospital, but thankfully, paramedics could revive him. But he spent three weeks in intensive care recovering from the illness. He also underwent ten operations, including amputating two toes and half a thumb because he’d developed gangrene during his ordeal.
