The Meat Puppets' final release for SST, 1989's Monsters is best described as a cross between their experimental Mirage and the more in-your-face Huevos (both released only a few months apart in 1987). Several major labels had been hotly pursuing the trio, but when negotiations slowed to a snail's pace, they decided to issue another album on SST in the meantime.

It wasn't long after the Fall 1989 release of ""Monsters"" that the Meat Puppets were off and running for newer and bigger things! For this reissue, three tracks have been added, filling out the album's running time to almost an hour.

Meat Puppets moved up to the major labels with 1991's Forbidden Places, and 1994's Too High to Die gave them a long-awaited commercial breakthrough with the hit single "Backwater." But bad fortune dogged the band in the wake of 1995's No Joke, and it wasn't until 2009's Sewn Together that Meat Puppets seemed to regain their musical footing after returning to their independent roots.
