24 de ene. de 2021 · Kilmainham Gaol as a working prison may have been closed, but it is now a symbol of Ireland’s painful past. In 1958, the Kilmainham Gaol Restoration Society was formed. In the 1960s, restorative work was done by a team of dedicated volunteers before the Irish government took over. In 1971, Kilmainham Gaol reopened as a museum.

Three main themes are explored on three levels of the exhibition space: social history of Kilmainham Gaol and Irish prisons in the 1800s. the history of Irish nationalism and republicanism, 1796-1924.
Le Kilmainham Gaol Museum Visitor Centre est situé à 3,5 km du centre-ville de Dublin et on y accède par l’ancien Kilmainham Courthouse. Il y a plusieurs façons de se rendre à la prison. La prison est desservie par plusieurs lignes de bus : No 60 depuis Wellington Quay ou Heuston Station, G1/G2 depuis Spencer Dock ou Wellington Quay.
