However, the twist of Red Mask creating the three Jokers is another plot point that's been waiting for resolution for years (Batman: Three Jokers notwithstanding).To resolve that plotline, an origin needed to build on something and the closest the Joker has to a solid origin story is the one from The Killing Joke.

The other three, of course, being The Dark Knight Returns, Batman Year One, and A Death in the Family. Conveniently, two of these stories also included The Joker and each was written in the same era.
The Joker : Yes, memory is so treacherous. One moment you're lost in a carnival of delight, childhood aromas, the flashing neon of puberty, all that sentimental candyfloss. The next, it takes you somewhere you don't want to be. Somewhere dark and cold, filled with damp, ambiguous-shaped things you'd rather forget.
