17 de oct. de 2008 · Dr. George E. Palade, a Nobel Prize-winning scientist who founded the Section of Cell Biology at the Yale School of Medicine, died on Oct. 8 at his home in Del Mar, California. He was 96 years old. “Dr. Palade was a giant in 20th century scientific research and was largely responsible for establishing cell biology as a modern discipline,” said Medical School Dean Dr. Robert Alpern.

George Emil Palade shared the 1974 Nobel Prize in medicine or physiology with 2 Belgian medical researchers, Albert Claude (1898-1983) and Christian Rene de Duve (1917-), for work on the structure and function of the internal components of cells. Palade developed tissue preparation methods and centrifugation techniques and conducted electron microscopic studies of several cellular structures.
