After use, a PET bottle can end up thrown away, openly burned or managed through waste disposal. If plastic is thrown away, it pollutes landscapes, waterways and ecosystems, affecting aquatic and terrestrial animals that often mistake it for food, introducing plastics into the food chain.

Of the seven billion tonnes of plastic waste generated globally so far, less than 10 per cent has been recycled. Millions of tonnes of plastic waste are lost to the environment, or sometimes shipped thousands of kilometres to destinations where it is mostly burned or dumped.

Plastic waste recycling reduces our need for more fossil fuels, saves energy, landfill space, and emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.
While only 8.7% of plastics were recycled in 2018, certain types of plastic were recycled more often than others, including PET bottles and jars (29.1%) and HDPE natural bottles (29.3%). Not all consumer plastics can be recycled. The majority of community recycling programs accept some, but not all, types of plastics.
