Cobwebs became a part of Minecraft gradually – their textures were added to the game’s files way back in 2009, then they were turned into an actual block in Beta version 1.5 in early 2011, then they only began spawning naturally when abandoned mineshafts and strongholds were added in the Adventure Update in late 2011.

A cobweb can partially stop blast damage if a player and the entity causing the explosion are both caught in the cobweb. A cobweb affects the player 's movement abilities, as well. While in contact with it, the player can move at a speed of about 25% of the normal walking speed.

Cobweb can be found in abandoned mineshafts and strongholds, and has the unique ability of slowing down anything that falls or moves through it, without damaging them. Including dropped items. The only exception to this are both spider types, which can move freely through the cobwebs and fired arrows.
