To me what made metallica better was the powerful-heavy blues sound of cliff burton. You are actually hearing the bass but you don't notice it. It's like saying i don't know if i'm hearing kirk's or james's guitar in a riff. In Ride the Lighting (the song) his bass is awesome. ALSO metallica is known for the poor mixing except in Kill 'Em All.
