Would suggest filling out your family tree on FamilySearch, then on the right of the page click Fan Chart on however you want see the ancestry of. That goes back 6 generations which is normally enough. Not sure how to fill out a fan chart with more generations than that though. Geneanet is also good.
Start with: full name, birthdate, marriage dates, names of their parents, names of their siblings, name of their children. Write down or record the information. Trust, but verify.
