Nobody in the Grateful Dead knew Keith Godchaux before he and his wife Donna Jean turned up at one of Jerry Garcia’s side gigs and informed Garcia that Keith was the Dead’s new keyboard player. And, as it turned out, he was. As improbable and unlikely and outright impossible the story seems, it also seems to have really happened like that.
After Constanten's departure, Pigpen reclaimed his position as sole keyboardist. Less than two years later, in late 1971, Pigpen was joined by another keyboardist, Keith Godchaux, who played grand piano alongside Pigpen's Hammond B-3 organ. In early 1972, Keith's wife, Donna Jean Godchaux, joined Grateful Dead as a backing vocalist.
