Baaba Maal é um cantor e violonista senegalês nascido no dia 12 de novembro de 1953 em Podor, cidade localizada ao lado do Rio Senegal.Ele é bem reconhecido na Africa e internacionalmente, sendo um dos músicos mais famosos de Senegal. Além do violão, Baaba também toca Instrumentos de percussão, tendo lançado álbuns para gravadoras grandes e independentes.
Baaba Maal forsøkte å utvikle en musikk som lå nær sine musikalske røtter, blant annet ved å ta i bruk de tradisjonelle instrumentene kora og tama, men også med moderne elementer, som elektriske gitarer. I 2001 samarbeidet han med Hans Zimmer om å skrive musikken til filmen Black Hawk Down og sang på fire av sporene. [4]
