Samuel R. Delany nació en 1942 en el barrio de Harlem, Nueva York. Sin embargo, su educación y cultura están muy lejos del ghetto negro. A los veinte años publica su primer libro de ciencia ficción: Las Joyas de Aptor (1962), y desde entonces es uno de los líderes- junto a Thomas M. Dish y J. G. Ballard- de la New Wave.
