Charlotte Brontë est une romancière anglaise. Elle passe son enfance à Haworth, où son père, pasteur, officie. Elle perd sa mère en 1821 puis ses deux sœurs aînées, Maria et Elisabeth, de la tuberculose. Ces morts vont durablement marquer sa vie. Elle part en pension afin de suivre des études en vue de devenir institutrice.
