Hans Makart was a 19th-century Austrian academic history painter, designer, and decorator. He is best known for his influence on Gustav Klimt and other Austrian artists, but in his own era he was considered an important artist himself and a celebrity figure in the high culture of Vienna and attended with almost cult-like adulation.
26 de nov. de 2013 · Hans Makart was not to be put off by the comments of his former tutors as he still retained a great self-belief in his artistic ability. In 1860 Makart moved from Vienna to Munich and in 1861 enrolled at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München , also known as the Munich Academy and, for four years, studied under the tutelage of the German painter and Munich Academician, Karl von Piloty.
On 1 October 2020, we opened a new collection presentation: MAKING HISTORY - Hans Makart and the Salon Painting of the 19th Century.At the centre of this exhibition is the museum's largest painting, The Entry of Charles V into Antwerp (1878) by Hans Makart (1840-1884). It measures no less than 50 square metres and is one of the most famous paintings in the Hamburger Kunsthalle.

Hans Makart – ein Popstar seiner Zeit Festzuhalten bleibt, dass Makarts Riesengemälde auch ein großer internationaler Erfolg war. Nach seiner Präsentation im Wiener Künstlerhaus, wo es innerhalb weniger Tage um die 40.000 zahlende Schaulustige gesehen hatten, ging es als Prunkstück zur Pariser Weltausstellung und wurde dort prompt ausgezeichnet.
