Nicolas Poussin nació el 15 de junio de 1594 en el seno de una familia campesina, en Les Andelys, Normandía. Hijo de Jean Poussin y Marie de Laisement. Cursó estudios de pintura en París y fue aprendiz en los talleres de Ferdinand Elle y Georges Lallemand.
