1 de mar. de 2021 · Ralph Peterson Jr., the drummer and bandleader who broke onto the scene with the Jazz Messengers in the early ’80s and went on to be a torchbearer of hard-bop, has died at the age of 58. Peterson died March 1 in North Dartmouth, Mass., due to complications from cancer, according to his publicist.

Just because I met Ralph Peterson when I was 18 years old, just because he took me under his wing and treated me like his little brother, just because we recorded several records together, just because he picked me up when I fell, and just because I picked him up when he was down doesn't make me a good candidate for writing these liner notes.

It was natural that Peterson would be a drummer since four of his uncles and a grandfather played drums.

Ralph’s fierce advocacy for maintaining the Blakey-esque hard bop traditions was evident in his drumming and in his life with a seemingly unstoppable energy and drive to play, promote, and preserve the language of America’s original improvised musical art form known as jazz.
