In Violent Femme’s early days, frontman Gordon Gano was a teenager, and therefore could not play at his local Milwaukee clubs. So, the band did the next best thing and honed their craft as street buskers with acoustic instrumentation.

Gano was set to be awarded by his school's chapter of the National Honor Society, and the ceremony included a talent show. He decided to sing and play guitar on an original song, "Gimme the Car."
