Centerstage was Spence's intricate, polyphonic and polyrhythmic guitar style. In 1944 and 1945 Spence worked in the USA, in Florida, Georgia, Carolina, Tennessee, Delaware. Then he returned to the Bahamas, but didn't record anything until the field recordings collected on The Complete Folkways Recordings, 1958 (Smithsonian, 1992).
Spence was born on 18 December 1959. He was educated at St Philip's School, a grammar school in Edgbaston, Birmingham, England, and at Salesian College, Battersea, a Roman Catholic school in Battersea, London. He studied modern history and politics at the University of Reading, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree.

Joseph Spence was born at Fresh Creek, on the island of Andros in the Bahamas. The son of a pastor, Joseph learned to play guitar as a teenager, to entertain folks at local dances.
