Home to a collection of nearly 50,000 works of art spanning 5,000 years, the Wadsworth is the oldest continuously operating public art museum in the United States, founded by Daniel Wadsworth in 1842 and welcoming the public since 1844.
The Austin House, a National Historic Landmark stewarded by the Wadsworth Atheneum, is the former West End home of A. Everett “Chick” Austin, Jr., the museum’s director from 1927 to 1944. There are approximately 732 objects [furnishings and other objects related to or created by Austin] within the house that will undergo an updated inventory in summer of 2024.
