Marius Petipa (1890). Marius Ivanovitš Petipa (ven. Мариус Иванович Петипа, oikealta nimeltään Victor Marius Alphonse Petipa); (11. maaliskuuta 1818 Marseille Ranska – 14. heinäkuuta (J: 1. heinäkuuta) 1910 Gurzuf, Krim, Venäjän keisarikunta) oli tanssija, koreografi ja opettaja, joka nosti venäläisen baletin kukoistukseensa 1800-luvulla.
In 1848, the well-known choreographer, Jules Perrot, became the chief choreographer of the Imperial Theatre. Ten years later, he was replaced by the equally famous Arthur Saint-Leon. After Arthur departed for Paris in 1869, where he died suddenly from a broken heart, the post of chief choreographer was taken by Marius Petipa.

Marius Petipa (1818-1910), son of the French ballet master Jean Petipa, made his debut as dancer in 1828, in a version of Pierre Gardel’s Le Dansomanie staged by his father. In 1847, he was engaged as a dancer with the Imperial Theatres in St Petersburg. Seven years later, he became a teacher at the Imperial Ballet School in the same city.
Petipa’s revivals. Throughout his sixty-year long career, Petipa staged four revivals of Le Corsaire; his first revival was staged especially for his wife Maria Surovshchikova-Petipa, with Petipa himself as Conrad and the ballerina Anna Kosheva as Gulnare.The production was premièred on the 5th February [O.S. 24th January] 1863 with a supplemented and revised score by Cesare Pugni.
