Discs 5, 6 and 7 make a bold statement about Sir Adrian Boult and his approach to Wagner, all recorded in the 1970s, like so much here, Boult’s ‘Indian Summer’. The non-operatic Faust Overture finds an expressive LPO and as with the Rienzi and Flying Dutchman ‘overtures’ and the ‘Grand March’ from Tannhäuser we are given weightier sound, the double basses being exceptionally strong.
