Hijo de Juan Caboto (más tarde conocido en Inglaterra como John Cabot), acompañó a su padre durante la estancia de este en España.Cuando Enrique VII, en 1496, dio patente de descubrimiento y exploración a Juan, incluyó también a sus tres hijos, uno de los cuales era Sebastián.Gozó de gran prestigio y estuvo alternativamente al servicio de Inglaterra y España.
