She was awarded a BAFTA as Best Supporting Actress for They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969) and was nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe for the same film. She won best actress for Images at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival. In 1991 she was appointed an Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
Susannah York, née Susannah Yolande Fletcher le 9 janvier 1939 à Londres, grandit en Écosse. Diplômée de la Royal Academy of Dramatic Art de Londres en 1958, elle décroche son premier vrai rôle en incarnant la fille du major Sinclair interprété par Alec Guinness dans Tunes of Glory (1960, Les Fanfares de la gloire ).
