Jay Black was the second, and more widely known, Jay to lead the band Jay and the Americans, the first being Jay Traynor. Black had previously come from the doo-wop group The Empires, where he had sung lead on their 1962 lone Epic Records single "Time and a Place" b/w "Punch Your Nose" (Epic 5-9527).

Jay and the Americans was one of the few successful groups to spend their entire career with one record label: all of their thirty-two singles and LPs were with United Artists. Jay Traynor died January 2, 2014, of liver cancer in a hospital in Tampa, Florida. He was 70. Jay Black nee David Blatt died from complications from pneumonia May 26, 2023.
