The bridge is also ‘Maudlin’ because it is named after the college. Mary Magdalen church is pronounced ‘Mag-duh-lin’ in the usual way, as is the street which is named after the church.
Magdalen College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford. It was founded in 1458 by William of Waynflete, Bishop of Winchester and is named after Mary Magdalene. The college is one of the largest and most prestigious colleges in Oxford, with approximately 500 undergraduates and 250 graduate students.
