Al año siguiente Velvet Crush, ahora como dúo, volvió a contar con la colaboración de Matthew Sweet para producirles “Free Expression” (1999), disco publicado el 26 de octubre de 1999 en el que Matthew también ayudó en la composición de varios temas, conformando una nueva colección de canciones de gran categoría pop, con tempos diversos y pasajes eléctricos y acústicos.

28 de jul. de 1999 · As was the case with Matthew Sweet's latest release (In Reverse), the Velvet Crush have developed a richer tone without eliminating the catchy pop hooks that make this band sound so great. This is the only record of 1999 that I picked up purely on a recommendation. I was well rewarded. With few execeptions, the tracks on this CD will be well worn.
