Five young men hammering out Rhythm & Blues in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne clubs under the modest name of The Alan Price Combo hear their audiences talking about “The Animals.” It was, they realised eventually, a reference to themselves, a name which they decided to adopt and which has made them a talking point among pop fans wherever they go.

The idea for the name came from overhearing some fans at Club-A-Go-Go telling each other “the animals are playing tonight,” while the band was doing a mic check.
